A composer-singer with a penchant for diversity
The recently released mixed album "Bedonar Gaan", under the banner of Soundtek, was well received in the audio market. The album features young and talented artiste Tomal -- as a singer and composer. The artiste spoke to The Daily Star about the album and his initiation in the music scene.
"I consider 'Dukkho misturi,' 'Tomar karoney' and 'Tumi' -- featured in the album -- to be good songs. Popular singer Fahmida Nabi has recorded the last song," said Tomal.
However, in his view, the highlight of the album is a song titled "Maskara". Lini Sabrin, sister of renowned artiste Baby Naznin, has rendered the song. Tomal pointed out that the late sound engineer Mobin, who was a close friend, did the mixing of the song.
Tomal's musical career began with the band Tirthak in the early 1990s. The band released one album titled "Duari". Some songs of the short-lived band, in particular, "Bhalo achhi bhalo theko," title track "Duari" and "Tumi basho kina" are still popular among music enthusiasts.
"Along with some of my friends from Jahangirnagar University, I formed the band. The band dissolved in 1996," said Tomal.
"Telephone," an album released under the banner of G-Series in 1999, included songs composed by Tomal. The album featured him as a singer too.
Tomal's first mixed album project as a composer was "Shaat Ronga Shaatjon (in 2001). The album featured famed artistes including Partha Barua, Pantha Kanai, Pathik Nabi and the late Sanjib Chowdhury.
Fahmida Nabi's solo album "Mon-e Ki Porey Na," under Laser Vision, is also part of Tomal's repertoire.
Over the last five years Tomal has been a member of the band Nagar Baul; the band has James as its vocalist.
Tomal's taste in music is diverse, and he displays a great dedication to his art. In his words, "I like variety when it comes to music. My aim is to deliver my best in every album."
A signature trait of Tomal's albums is that each features an instrumental track.
