Need for planned city stressed
The 400th anniversary of Dhaka city as a capital was celebrated on the Dhaka University campus yesterday amid much enthusiasm among its teachers and students.
On the occasion, the roads and different key points on the campus were designed with traditional items of the city. Female students wore sarees, while male students wore different types of traditional dresses.
The daylong programmes included music, concert, discussion, debate, painting and photo exhibitions, kite flying and mass signature collection campaign.
Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz formally inaugurated the programme at Mall Square where Emeritus Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury, Dean of Social Science Faculty Prof Harun-or-Rashid, Dean of Arts Faculty Prof Sadrul Amin, Associate Prof Rezwana Chowdhury Banya and Workers' Party President Rashed Khan Menon took part.
The speakers said once the Dhaka city was considered as a city of garden. Buildings and other structures were seen besides gardens. A huge number of greeneries were the main characteristics of the city.
Artistes from different cultural organisations rendered folk and traditional songs of the city, recited poems as part of the celebration.
DUDS organised a debate session in local languages where debating teams participated in the city's local language and the local languages of Sylhet, Barisal and Rangpur.
