Reopen RU, hold dean polls

Demand teachers

Teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) under the banner of Progressive Teachers Society yesterday met RU acting Vice Chancellor Prof Mamnunul Keramat and demanded reopening of the university before October 10.
The teachers led by its Convener Prof Mozaffar Hossain also protested the appointment of hall provosts, RUCSU treasurer, TSC director and other important posts under political considerations on the campus by the acting VC.
They also demanded immediate declaration of schedule for deans' election, as the operation of all dean activities by the previous deans is a gross violation of 1973 act.
The teachers called on Keramat to refrain from taking important policymaking activities while serving as an acting VC.
They also demanded a neutral investigation into all controversial recruitment at the university, including 546 third and fourth-class employees and teachers' appointment.
Prof Anando Kumar Saha, Prof Fayekuzzaman, Prof Jalal Uddin, Prof SM Abu Bakkar, Prof Muhammad Nurullah, Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Zahan, Prof Dulal Chandra Roy, Prof Sayed Ali Haider, Tarek Noor and Hasibul Alam took part in the meeting.
Member of the society Prof Fayekuzzaman told newsman that the VC assured them of fulfilling their demands as soon as possible.
Earlier on Tuesday, the teachers organised a press conference and demanded immediate removal of Prof Keramat and urged the government to appoint a 'neutral, highly skilled and experienced' person to the post for smoothly running the university.
They also called on the government to remove all corrupt and politically appointed teachers and staffs from important administrative positions.
