Civil society members at a view exchange meeting yesterday urged the caretaker government to form a people's commission to probe into all extra-judicial killings to help establish human rights in the country.
They said all extra-judicial killings including crossfire, encounter, gunfight and shoot-out violate the country's constitution, human rights and rule of law.
The meeting on extra-judicial killings and rule of law was organised by Democratic Left Alliance at the National Press Club in the city.
Speakers at the meeting condemned the extra-judicial killings and urged the caretaker government to immediately stop crossfire, encounter and gunfight.
Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah said every citizen has rights to go to court, but law enforcers especially the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police kill people before producing them before the court.
Prof Akmal Hossain said a mass investigation commission comprising teachers, politicians, and human rights activists should be formed immediately to ensure justice.
Meghna Guha Thakurata of Dhaka University said military personnel have entered into democratic institutions.
Pias Karim of Brac University said a national committee comprising civil society members will have to be formed to strengthen the movement for establishing human rights.
Advocate Ruhul Kuddus Babu alleged that Rab has been killing innocent people since its inception in 2003 but could not kill a single militant.
Leaders of left-learning parties including Democratic Left Alliance and human rights activists also addressed the meeting.
