AL gets eight, BNP one
Awami League-nominated candidates won eight mayoral posts, out of nine, while BNP-nominated candidate secured one post in the municipality elections yesterday.
Dupchachia Municipality
BNP leader Jahangir Alam was unofficially elected mayor of Dupchachia Municipality in Bogra.
Returning officer and Dupchachia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Manirul Huda said Jahangir bagged 4,893 votes while his nearest rival Alhaj Nurul Haque, an independent candidate, secured 2,684 votes, according to a report sent by our staff correspondent in Bogra.
Jahangir, who had been detained in jail for several months on charges of various crimes, including extortion, was released on bail few days ago.
A total of six candidates joined the fray in Dupchachia Pourashava. Of them, AL-backed candidate Ahmedur Rahman Biplob got only 1,091 votes to become the sixth.
Manikganj Municipality
Our Correspondent in Manikganj reports: Detained Awami League leader Md Ramzan Ali was unofficially elected the mayor of Manikganj Municipality.
Ramzan bagged 16,208 votes while his nearest rival Nasiruddin Ahmed Jadu of BNP got 8,947 votes.
Golapganj Municipality
Our staff correspondent in Sylhet adds: Awami League leader Zakaria Ahmed Paplu was elected mayor of Golapganj Municipality in Sylhet.
Zakaria Ahmed Paplu bagged 5,403 votes while his nearest rival Sirajul Islam Jabbar Chowdhury got 2,412 votes in Golapganj Pourashava mayoral election.
Sitakunda Municipality
Our staff correspondent in Chittagong reports: Awami League leader Shafiul Alam alias Nayek Shafi was elected the mayor of Sitakunda Municipality.
Nayek Shafi bagged 12170 votes to be elected the mayor.
His nearest rival BNP leader Abul Kalam Azad, the incumbent chairman of the municipality, got 4213 votes.
Shariatpur municipality
UNB adds: Abdur Rab Munshi of Awami League was declared unofficially elected in Shariatpur Municipality.
Munshi polled 10,436 votes while his nearest rival Sardar AKM Nasiruddin of BNP bagged 8,288 votes.
Phulbaria Municipality
Our correspondent from Mymensingh adds: Awami League candidate Golam Kibria was elected unofficially the mayor of Phulbaria Municipality.
He bagged 3692 votes while his nearest rival Chand Mahmud Sarker of BNP secured 3409 votes.
Nine were elected councillors. They are Shekander Ali, Md Abdul Halim, Safar Ali Bulu, Jalal Uddin Sarker, Md Abdul Latif Chowdhury, Shahjahan Sikder, ABM Siddique, Abul Fazal and Md Abdul Gafur.
The three elected women representatives for reserved seats are Hasina Akhtar, Lima Akhtar and Aysha Siddiqa.
According to Election office sources, 15757 voters, out of 17266, cast their votes, including 8648 male and 8618 female voters. Over 91 percent of the total votes were cast.
Sreepur Municipality
UNB from Gazipur adds: Anisur Rahman of Awami League was declared elected unofficially mayor of Sreepur Municipality with a wide margin.
Anis polled 17,805 votes while his nearest rival Nurul Islam of BNP got with 7,670 votes.
Nawhata Municipality
Staff Correspondent from Rajshahi adds: Awami League-nominated candidate Abdul Gafur won the mayoral election in Nawhata Municipality bagging 16606 votes, some 7811 vote higher than his nearest rival.
His nearest rival BNP backed incumbent municipal chairman Mokbul Hossain got 8795 votes.
Returning Officer Humayun Kabir said the voters' turnout in all the 16 centres was 93 percent.
Chuadanga Municipality
UNB adds: Reazul Islam Joarder of Awami League won the mayoral elections in the Chuadanga Municipality bagging 25,592 votes while his nearest rival Khandker Abdul Jabber of BNP got 18,495 votes.
