Jalil's parole extended by 2 months more
The government has extended the parole of ailing Awami League (AL) General Secretary Abdul Jalil, currently undergoing treatment in Singapore, by two months, a home ministry release said yesterday.
The extension came in response to Jalil's application for extending his parole so that he can continue his medical treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
“The government has extended the parole on humanitarian grounds for the sake of treatment with effect from May 11,” said the statement signed by deputy secretary of the home ministry Md Mizanur Rahman.
This is for the third time Jalil's parole has been extended.
On March 2, the AL leader was released on parole for one month for treatment abroad. He flew to Singapore the next day.
Jalil was arrested at his Mercantile Bank office at Dilkusha on May 28, 2007 without any specific charges.
Later, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against him accusing him of concealing wealth.
After his detention, Jalil was first taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital on June 4 last year as he complained of chest pain.
He was suffering from various critical diseases, including high blood pressure and kidney problems. Later, the AL leader was shifted to LabAid Cardiac Hospital in the city, but his health continued to deteriorate.
The party leaders and family members of Jalil have been demanding his release and allowing him travel abroad for better treatment.
But the government released him on parole only after his condition turned serious and a high-powered medical board suggested his treatment abroad.
