50 hurt as Jubo Dal, JCD men clash with cops
At least 50 people were injured in a clash between law enforcers and pro-BNP Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal activists in Rupganj of Narayanganj yesterday afternoon as police barred their joint procession.
Of them, nine activists -- five of Jubo Dal, youth front of the BNP, and four of Chhatra Dal, the pro-BNP students' organisation -- were hit by rubber bullets while 15 policemen were injured in brickbats.
The injured were admitted to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex and different local clinics.
During the clash, vehicular movement on Dhaka-Sylhet highway remained suspended for around an hour.
Police arrested eight people from the spot for their alleged involvement in the clash.
Sheikh Nazmul Alam, district superintendent of police, said at least 50 people including 15 policemen were injured during the clash. Police fired around 200 rounds of rubber bullets and 50 tear gas shells to control the situation.
The procession of Rupganj Upazila Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal was organised to congratulate the newly-formed central committee of Chhatra Dal and celebrating the jail release day of BNP's Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Witnesses said police intercepted the procession near Bhulta Puraton Bazar area around 4:30pm and an altercation took place between them. Police then charged batons on the activists.
The agitated activists hurled brick pelts at the law enforcers and also vandalised around eight vehicles when traffic movement came to a halt on the highway.
Anwar Sadat Sayem, district unit president of Chhatra Dal, alleged that police charged batons on the peaceful procession without any provocation.
