BNP procession foil
Police yesterday foiled a mourning procession of main opposition BNP in front of its Chittagong city unit office at Nasiman Bhaban near Kazir Dewry intersection.
“To hold any political programmes in the city, parties need permission from Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) but they did not ask for permission so we obstructed the march,” said Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Mohiuddin Selim.
Chittagong city unit of BNP and Jubo Dal city unit jointly attempted to bring out the mourning parade protesting the death of Jubo Dal leader Humayun Kabir who died on May 19, succumbing to injuries received in a clash between BNP activists and police on May 13.
Following the foiled march, party activists arranged a condolence rally in front of its office.
“By obstructing our mourning procession, which was to be observed peacefully, the government showed how it violates all political, constitutional, and civic rights of the people of the country,” said Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, president of BNP city unit.
The people will answer to the non-democratic ways of the current government in the next parliamentary election, he said.
BNP leaders Abu Sufian and Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Jubo Dal leaders -- Mosharraf Hossain Dipty, Kazi Belal and Abu Bakkar Hashem -- spoke among others.
Earlier, Doctors' Association Bangladesh (DAB) Chittagong unit activists formed a human chain in Kazir Dewry area demanding withdrawal of the false case filed against Shadat Hossain, BNP city unit general secretary, on charge of vandalising vehicles.
