A traffic sergeant suffered injuries after being hit by a recklessly driven private car at Panthapath in the city yesterday.
The victim, Riazul Islam Riaz, 40, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with severe head injuries. Later, he was shifted to Square Hospitals Ltd.
Police said a BBA student of a private university was enjoying the joyride in a private car to celebrate Valentine's Day with a girl, whom he later introduced as his friend. Police detained the youth Aliul Islam, 22, and the girl along with the car.
Abdul Jalil, sub-inspector of Tejgaon Police Station, said Riazul was on duty near Basundhara Shopping Mall. He noticed the "madly driven" car coming from Green Road around 10:00am. He signaled for the car to stop.
The car hit the sergeant as it tried to escape defying his signal. Locals chased down the car some yards off the spot.
The youth told police that he hangs out using his father's car from their Gulshan-2 residence. He claimed that he had a driving licence but lost it.
