Five pirates die in gunfight with BDR
Five pirates were killed and two others injured in a gunfight between Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and the pirates in the Sundarbans in Shyamnagar upazila of the district yesterday.
Around 450 rounds of bullets were exchanged during the shootout, BDR sources said.
Five guns and 43 bullets were recovered from two engine boats of the pirates.
The dead were identified as Md Zulu, 32 and Md Baki, 38, of Rampal in Bagerhat, Md Nasir, 34, of Rupsa and Samrat Zahir, 40, of Daulatpur in Khulna. The identity of the other was not known. All of them were killed on the spot.
Of the injured, Bablu Mollah of Khalishpur in Khulna was taken to Shyamnagar upazila health complex with a bullet wound in head while identity of the other, who is the boatman, could not be known immediately.
Tipped off, BDR personnel chased the boats in river Kalindi and encircled the pirates near Kalir Char area at about 11:00am, Major Alamgir, commanding officer (CO) of 7 Rifles Battalion told The Daily Star.
As the law enforcers asked the criminals to surrender, they opened fire prompting the BDR to retaliate, he said adding that the gunfight lasted for almost an hour.
Contacted, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shyamnagar Police Station Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident.
