59 Indians languishing in Satkhira district jail

At least 59 Indian nationals including three women are languishing in Satkhira district jail, despite completion of their prison terms.
The jail authorities tried several times to send them back to India but the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) repeatedly refused to accept them.
The Indian nationals now languishing in the district jail are Montu Paramanik, 33, Ashraf Sheikh, 45, Sabbir Rahman, 35, Shah Jahan Ali Molla, 33, Md Zakir, Nazir Hossain, 32, Anajali Devi alias Monju Rani, 40, Bijoy Kumar, 42, Smriti Mondal, 40, Bai Mondal, 38, Modon Karmokar, 35, Bhaskari Nayeki, 32, Nazrul Mondal, 33, Yakub Ali Khan, 30, Montu Chang, 38, Baddi Mondal, 45, Maharu Kalsingji, 28, Harmaji Pandi, 38, Mohammad Reza, 70, Sree Ram Milon, 50, Ram Sing, 35, Zinkao, 37, Ashik Sheikh, 27, Mahadev Ghosh, 60, Naresh Chengshi, 40, Sambori Wang, 28, Ganesh Goshwami, 35, Subol Kanti Mondal, 45, Majer, 35, Jinnah, 36, Rajpal, 33, Ajit, 44, Kanna, 44, Rajkumar, 24, Sohrab, 70, Shariful Islam, 38, Sanyasi Das, 36, Abul Sheikh, 38, Gopal Mondal,, 50 and Chunna Sing, 50.
They hail from Indian states of West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharastra, Tripura, Rajsthan, Hariana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
They were arrested by Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and police from the border areas in last one decade on charge of their involvement in various crimes including smuggling, arms peddling.
They were convicted by the courts concerned and were sentenced to suffer two to five years rigorous imprisonment. Prison terms of some of the convicts ware completed in 2002.
On completion of their prison terms in different jails including in Satkhira, the jail authorities tried to send them back to India several times but Indian Border Security Force (BSF) declined to accept them on the plea that they can not do it without 'order from the government.'
While talking to this correspondent, Shah Jahan Ali Molla, Sanyasi Das and Mahadev Ghosh and others at the jail gate recently urged the authorities concerned to take measure so that they can go back to their houses in India.
But the jail authorities are yet to be able to release them due to 'indifferent attitude' of the BSF, jail sources said.
The jail authorities even tried to push them back to India on completion of their prison term last year but they would take them only after verifying their nationality.
Since then on step was taken by the BSF authorities in this regard, jail authorities said.
Contacted, Satkhira Jail Superintendent Nurun Nabi Bhuiyan said, the prisoners were brought to the district from other jails in the country and their jail terms ended two to five years back
"We could not send them back as the Indian authorities are not showing interest,” he said.
