4 killed in cylinder explosion
Four of a family, three of them children, were burnt alive when a gas cylinder of a CNG-run microbus exploded on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj yesterday.
The victims, who were on board the microbus, were identified as Phul Mia, 55, of Bashgari village under Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria district, his daughter Nahida, 8, and nephews Mehedi and Jewel, both 10 years of age.
Arju Mia, officer-in-charge of Gazaria Police Station, said the accident occurred around 1:30pm near Sher Ali Petrol Pump at Baluakandi.
Additional Police Superintendent of Munshiganj Saiful Islam said the cylinder of the microbus exploded with a big bang after hitting a road divider when it was taking a U-turn after refueling gas from the pump.
The explosion ignited a fire in the microbus instantly.
The microbus driver and seven other passengers on board escaped with minor injuries by jumping out of the vehicle.
The victims were on their way to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from Brahmanbaria to receive Abdul Hannan, younger brother of Phul Mia.
