Fastest variety of Aman to be released soon
The country's fastest growing variety of Aman paddy innovated by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) is expected to be released within two or three months.
BRRI Director General Dr Md Abdul Mannan told the news agency that the variety-BRRI-56, possible name of the paddy, will have less lifetime than any other Aman variety of the country.
The lifetime of the newly innovated Aman paddy is 100 to 105 days, which is 10 days less than two short duration varieties of BRRI- 33 and BINA-7, the DG added.
He said Seed Certification Agency, Department of Agriculture extension (DAE) and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) are jointly conducting evaluation of the variety at the northern region today, saying this is the last evaluation of the paddy.
After that, Dr Mannan said, the evaluation team will place a report before the technical committee of National Seed Board for final approval for cultivation at farmer's level.
He said the variety is expected to be cultivated at farmer's level next Aman season. Production rate of BRRI-56 will be 4.5 tonnes per hectare, he added.
Earlier BRRI had developed short duration Aman variety-BRRI 33, Dr Mannan said adding the newly developed Aman paddy will get popularity among the farmers of northern region.
BRRI sources said crops production, particularly potatoes, in the northern region hampers every year as farmers do not get enough time after harvesting existing Aman varieties.
Two short duration varieties BRRI-33 and BINA-7 are helping farmers minimizing time gap in the region to boost food production, the sources said.
