Murdered for chiding pupil

Arrestees tell of plot behind killing Sylhet college teacher

The fiancé of a female student plotted the murder of associate professor Harun Ur Rashid as the teacher rebuked the pupil for her affair with the youth, revealed Rab's interrogation yesterday.
Rapid Action Battalion arrested the female student, Sujina Akhtar Munni, her classmate Safia Khatun Lipi, Russell Ahmed and Alimul Islam, friends of Munni's boyfriend Kawsar, and manager of a local hotel Lokman Bhuiyan, who sheltered Kawsar, from different places of the town in last two days.
Kawsar, son of a former Union Parishad chairman in Sunamganj, was hiding in the hotel, but managed to escape the battalion's dragnet.
Harun Ur Rashid was a senior teacher of Sylhet Govt Mahila College. He was stabbed dead on March 21.
Rab first arrested Russell at his Ponitola residence and recovered Harun's cellphone from his possession. Other arrests were made following his statement.
Munni told Rab members that a few days before the killing, Harun had rebuked Munni for her affair with Kawsar. She informed her boyfriend of the chiding, which prompted him to kill the teacher with the help of Russell and Alimul.
However, Munni made a different version to the newsmen yesterday saying she just informed Kawsar of her teacher's misbehaviour. "I just shared it with Kawsar and never anticipated that he would make such a serious attempt."
Rab officials quoted the arrestees as saying that minutes before the incident, Lipi phoned Harun to know the time of his return from college. The killers got prepared accordingly.
As Harun reached near his house, Russell hit him with a piece of wood, Alimul caught his hands tight and Kawsar stabbed him.
Munni and Lipi, both second year honours students of the college, witnessed the killing from the teacher's residence where they used to go for private tuition.
