Police yesterday took Maj Dalim's brother Kamrul Haque Swapan and Freedom Party leader Abdur Rahim to an eight-day remand in connection with the bomb attack on ruling Awami League (AL) lawmaker Fazle Noor Taposh.
Maj Dalim is a convict in Bangabandhu murder case who is currently absconding abroad, and Freedom Party was founded by Col (retd) Syed Farooqur Rahman, another convicted and self-proclaimed killer of Bangabandhu.
A police source said they found links between Swapan and Rahim, while Inspector General of Police Nur Mohammad told The Daily Star, "Police have been investigating whether Swapan and Rahim are linked."
Police arrested Swapan from his Gulshan-2 residence on Thursday night while Rahim was picked the same night from his residence in Fakirapool where he also owns a hotel.
Sources said Freedom Party is strong in Motijheel and Fakirapool areas where a number of the party leaders operate their businesses.
Police are also looking for a few other Freedom Party leaders who reside in Fakirapool, Motijheel, and Paltan areas of the capital, the sources added.
Talking to The Daily Star, Motijheel Zone Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Police Khandaker Mahid Uddin said they arrested Swapan and Rahim as suspects in the investigation of the Wednesday night's bomb attack on Taposh in front of his law chamber in Motijheel.
"We are interrogating both arrestees to be confirmed whether they were involved in the attack," the DC said adding, "We are also looking into the possibilities of other persons having links."
Meanwhile, in the forwarding report submitted before the court, Motijheel police said Swapan and Rahim should be remanded for 10 days for the sake of the investigation, but the court granted eight days.
In the statement of the case filed with Motijheel police station by Fazle Noor Taposh, he accused family members, relatives, and associates of Bangabanhdu murder case convicts, of attempting to kill him in a bid to obstruct the proceedings of the case, and to create anarchy in the country.
