Adhering to best practices while drawing blood
Phlebotomy or drawing blood for diagnostic tests is the most commonly used invasive procedure all over the world. The World Health Organization has guidelines for phlebotomy, the full compliance of which is a precondition for better health care. Unfortunately, many local diagnostic centres do not comply with that.
During my recent visit to a well-known diagnostic centre at Uttara, Dhaka, I saw the staff performing the procedure with bare hands. This is probably a common practice in many diagnostic centres in the country. I think the health authorities should properly enforce WHO guidelines and stress on providing health workers with necessary training.
