Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka Celebrates World Intellectual Property Day
Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka, in collaboration with the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Ministry of Industries, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh organised a seminar titled- “Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity” to celebrate the World Intellectual Property (IP) Dayon April 26, 2018. Numerous law students, teachers, legal practitioners as well as IP experts and enthusiasts attended the seminar. Earlier in the day, a rally also took place at University of Dhaka to celebrate this occasion.
The chief guest of the semoinar was Mr. Justice M R Hasan, the Company Bench Judge of the High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, while Professor Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah, Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka chaired the program. At the onset, Professor Dr. Naima Huq, Chairman, Department of Law, University of Dhaka delivered the welcome speech. She underlined the significance of establishing a specialised IP Law Center under the Faculty of Law for encouraging research and innovation, commercialisng innovation with IP and raising IP awareness in the society at large.
The Registrar, Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Ministry of Industries, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Mohammad. Sanowar Hossain also spoke at the inaugural ceremony as the guest of honor and expressed his desire to work in collaboration with Faculty of Law, DU to create skilled IP law practitioners who would be adept in patent drafting and litigation. Mr. Justice M R Hasan and Professor Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah also felt the need for IP courses in the undergraduate level in order for the students to compete in this sector globally and protect numerous innovations of the mass people as well as of the experts in various specialised fields.
In the following session, Mr. Mohammad Sanowar Hossain, Registrar, Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Ministry of Industries, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Professor Dr. Md. Towhidul Islam, Department of Law, University of Dhaka presented their papers for the seminar titled ‘Introduction of Intellectual Property Rights and Protection Mechanisms Practiced in Bangladesh’ and ‘Powering Change Through Innovation and Creativity: Intellectual Property Rights and Bangladeshi Women’ respectively.
Afterwards, Mr. Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supan, Associate Professor, Department of Law, University of Dhaka and Mr. Md. Obaidur Rahman, Deputy Registrar, Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Ministry of Industries, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh discussed and made valuable comments on the papers presented at the seminar. They cited various examples and put forward suggestions regarding the role of Bangladeshi women in innovation in various fields and stressed upon how their innovations required legal protection under Intellectual Property Laws.
The seminar ended with an interactive Q&A session followed by a vote of thanks being delivered on behalf of the Law Faculty.
