The government and the prosecution both are happy with the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for his war crimes in 1971.

About an hour after the verdict was delivered this morning, Law Minister Anisul Huq expressed his satisfaction over the verdict when he was talking to our court correspondent over phone.

“The government will take necessary legal steps for executing the verdict against Kamaruzzaman,” the minister said.  He, however, did not give any detail about the procedure.

Prosecutor Tureen Afroz, in her immediate reaction, told reporters that the prosecution panel was satisfied with the judgment as it “fulfilled the expectation of the nation.”

The apex court today upheld Kamaruzzaman’s death in one of the charges while commuting capital punishment in another charge to life imprisonment.
