Gonoforum MP Mokabbir Khan today came under attack reportedly by some ruling party activists in Sylhet's Bishwanath upazila.
"My vehicle got damaged in the attack which was carried out around 11:30am in front of the upazila parishad complex. I am unharmed," Mokabbir told The Daily Star.
"I was going to the upazila's monthly law and order meeting and saw a group of people, led by two AL men whom I identified as Shamim and Siraj, gather near the complex. They threw bricks at my convoy and damaged my vehicle," Mokabbir, also a member of Gonoforum's central convening committee, said.
"Though I had police protocol, they did not try to stop the attack and the attackers fled," the lawmaker also said.
"I was inside the meeting room when the MP's convoy was attacked. Hearing about the attack, I rushed out to see what happened. This is an unfortunate incident," said Md Nunu Miah, chairman of Bishwanath Upazila Parishad and an advisory board member of Sylhet District unit Awami League.
"Even if the attackers are Awami League activists, they must be brought to justice for attacking a parliamentarian. The upazila complex has CCTV coverage and the perpetrators can be easily identified from the footage," he said.
Shamim Musa, officer-in-charge of Bishwanath Police Station, said, "We have identified the attacker as one Shamim and we are trying to arrest him. We will be looking into the matter."
Meanwhile, no case was filed either by the police or the parliamentarian in this connection.
Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain and convener Dr Reza Kibria condemned the attack, reports UNB.
In a joint statement, they voiced concern over the attack although there was police protection.
The duo demanded the government put the offenders under trial through proper investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Reza Kibria talked to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan who assured him of looking into the matter with due importance.
Mokabbir Khan was elected MP from Sylhet-2 with Gonoforum's ticket in the last general election.
