Wins for Dhaka and Rajshahi
While an all-round performance from Mahedi Hasan ensured a five-wicket win for Dhaka Platoon during their Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BBPL) encounter against Cumilla Warriors, it was an all-round team effort from Rajshahi Royals that helped them register a seven-wicket victory over Khulna Tigers under lights at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram yesterday.
Khulna were restricted to a modest 145 for nine thanks to brilliant bowling displays by the likes of Andre Russell, Kamrul Islam and Mohammad Irfan.
Rajshahi skipper Russell led the charge with the ball, picking up four wickets for 37 after having elected to field first. Right-arm pacer Kamrul returned figures of two for 23 in three overs but it was Pakistani pacer Irfan who kept things tight at the other end, giving away just 12 runs in three overs without any wicket. For Khulna, Shamsur Rahman top-scored with a 46-ball 55 in the middle to help Khulna’s cause.
In chase of the modest total, Rajshahi were solid at the top as the two openers -- Liton Das and Afif Hossain -- gave them a decent start. Afif fell in the ninth over after a 75-run opening stand while Liton picked up his first fifty of the tournament before being dismissed in the 12th over for a 44-ball 58. Russell smashed an unbeaten 19-ball 28 to help his side get over the line with 12 balls to spare.
In the day’s first game, Mahedi’s incredible figures of two for nine helped Dhaka restrict Cumilla to a challenging 160 for three before the all-rounder played a brilliant 29-ball 59-run knock to help Dhaka edge past Cumilla with a ball to spare.
