Three AL men 'abducted' in Narayanganj
Three ruling party men, including a union level Jubo League leader, have been traceless since they were whisked away in a microbus in Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila yesterday afternoon, their family members said.
The three are Shafiqur Rahman Badal, 45, president of Kayetpara union Jubo League, Shakil Mia, an activist of Awami League's youth wing, and Shakil, a Chhatra League man.
Panic gripped the area following the incident that came four days into the recovery of four bullet-hit bodies in Araihazar upazila of the district. The families of the four alleged that they had been picked up by some people who had identified themselves as detectives.
Narayanganj police said they did not pick up the three.
Citing witnesses, Badal's cousin Shamsul Alam Molla told The Daily Star the Jubo League leader and the two others were heading for Paragao from Boralubazar area in a motorcycle around 4:00pm.
All of a sudden, a microbus intercepted them and the three were taken away in that, he said.
Badal's family came to know about the incident around an hour later. His mobile phone has been switched off.
Badal used to live with his family in Dhaka but frequented Rupganj for political activities.
As the news spread, local Jubo league and Swechchasebak League men blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Bhulta-Golakandail area and part of the Asian Highway Bypass around 7:00pm.
They removed the barricades around an hour later on police assurance.
Moniruzzaman Monir, officer-in-charge of Rupganj Police Station, said they were trying to find the three.
