Kashmir reports first coronavirus death
A 65-year-old Kashmiri man who tested positive for Covid-19 has died in India's Srinagar city.
It is the first coronavirus death of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The total number of fatalities due to coronavirus infection across India is now 13, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
"As we share the sad news of our first #Covid19 fatality, my heart goes out to the family of the deceased. We stand with you and share your grief," Mayor of Srinagar Junaid Azim Mattu tweeted.
Government spokesperson Rohit Kansal also confirmed the death via Twitter.
"First death due to Coronavirus- 65 years old Male from Hyderpora (locality in) Srinagar. Four of his contacts also tested positive yesterday," the spokesperson said.
Four more people had tested positive for coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases to 11, forcing the authorities to impose more stringent curbs on movement and assembly of people to contain the spread of the virus.
Authorities in Kashmir have expressed apprehensions that the cases could be more than reported as a significant number of people appeared to have concealed their travel history, our correspondent also reports.
As per a government bulletin on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir, as many as 5,124 travellers and people who came in contact with suspected and positive cases have been put under surveillance.
Meanwhile, the total number of Covid-19 cases in the western Indian state of Maharashtra went up to 124, the highest in India, as two more persons tested positive today, our correspondent reports quoting health officials as saying.
"Both are from Mumbai city. We are finding out if they have any travel history," an official said.
In Madhya Pradesh, the number of Covid-19 cases rose to 20 today with five more patients in Indore hospitals testing coronavirus positive. The tally includes a Ujjain-based woman, who died on Wednesday in Indore, the officials also said.
Curfew has been imposed in seven districts of Madhya Pradesh linked to coronavirus positive cases.
In the southern state of Karnataka, a 56-year old man, who suspected that he had contracted the coronavirus infection, ended his life in Udupi district, police sources said.
Sources said the man had no specific symptoms of the virus infection. He was awake till 2am in the night, speaking to his family members but was found hanging from a tree near the house.
