Humanity at its worst
What we have witnessed in a recent incident where a woman was blindfolded, beaten and murdered in a moving bus after her father was thrown off it is a manifestation of humanity at its worst. That a passenger was killed only because she was engaged in an altercation with the bus staff, as disclosed by the investigation officer of the case, is apalling. Over the years, crimes in running buses have increased at an alarming rate. And unfortunately, women are the prime victims in these incidents.
The incident reminds us of Rupa Khatun, a law student, who was raped and murdered inside a moving bus last year. Immediately after Rupa's murder, there have been several gang-rapes and murders inside moving buses across the country. Only a few months ago, a mentally challenged woman was raped inside a moving bus in Tangail. In this particular case, we will have to wait till the autopsy report is available to know whether the woman was also raped before being killed.
Needless to say, the main reason for the rise of sexual harassment, rape and murder by transport workers inside public buses is the impunity they enjoy. Almost in all the cases, they get away scot-free after committing the most heinous of crimes.
It is surprising why the police still could not find the bus where the murder took place or arrest any of the culprits. Also, why is it taking so long to get the autopsy report? Those who have murdered the woman should be immediately apprehended and brought to justice. We also urge the government to deploy special police patrol teams for ensuring security of the passengers on the highway, particularly in the crime-prone areas such as Ashulia and Chandra. Passengers' safety must be ensured at all costs.
