One arrested for beating up Foodpanda deliveryman in Savar
Police today arrested a man on charge of beating up a Foodpanda deliveryman in Savar.
The accused, Shahidur Rahman Sujan, (35), was arrested soon after a citizen sent a video recorded on his mobile phone to Bangladesh Police's official Facebook Page, a press release of the Police Headquarters said today.
"The video showed a man beating the Foodpanda deliveryman in Savar's Bonpukul area. After watching the video, the media and public relations wing instructed Savar Police Station Officer-in-Charge AFM Sayed to take immediate action and arrest the accused," said Md Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general of PHQ, in the press release.
The Savar Police Station OC assigned a team led by an officer to take action.
The team found out that the Foodpanda employee had come to deliver ordered food to the accused's house. The accused, Sujan, had asked him to bring the packet of the food upstairs. However, the deliveryman, fearing that his bicycle might be stolen, urged the accused to collect the food from the gate, said the PHQ release.
Sujan got angry due to the deliveryman's request, went downstairs and started beating him.
"The victim Abdul Latif, (25), the deliveryman, filed a case against Sujan, with the police station this afternoon. He was arrested from Thana Road area of Savar around 5:30 pm," Savar Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Saiful Islam told The Daily Star.
"Sujan is a former personal assistant of a local MP," added Saiful, reports our Savar correspondent.
In the video, another person was also seen beating the deliveryman. Initially, police found the incident to be true and arrested Sujan. Legal action is being taken in this regard, the press release further said.
As Sujan is influential in the area, the person who recorded the incident was forced to remove the video from social media, the PHQ release added.
