ACC sues 11 people for including Rohingyas in voter list, negligence in duty
The Anti-Corruption Commission today filed two cases accusing a director of the Election Commission headquarters in one of the cases for his negligence in duties during his time as the as the senior district election officer of Chattogram in 2019.
Ten others including six EC staff and two Rohingyas have also been sued in the two cases by the ACC today, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Shuvash Chandra Dutta, deputy director of ACC Headquarters and Sharif Uddin, deputy assistant director of ACC's Chattogram Integrated Office-2 filed the cases in Chattogram, according to ACC sources.
"During an investigation in 2019, ACC found that 55,310 persons including several Rohingya people had been illegally included in voter list using official EC laptops," Sharif Uddin told The Daily Star.
"During the primary probing, ACC also found an official laptop of EC was missing. While the matter was being investigated, ACC found that seven designated EC laptops were also missing. Though the incident was very sensitive, there was no effort by the then EC officials to recover those devices," he added.
Those laptops went missing during the tenure of Khorshed Alam in Chattogram.
"EC head office had formed a probe committee headed by Khorshed Alam to investigate how Rohingya robber Nur Alam, who was killed in a gunfight in Teknaf in 2019, managed a Bangladeshi NID. But while probing Nur Alam's NID card incident, Khorshed Alam technically avoided the issue of missing laptops and submitted his report before the commission without mentioning the name of the EC staff who were responsible for the stolen laptops," said DAD Sharif.
"As the missing laptop incident took place during Khorshed's tenure, he tried to save himself and the other accused to avoid their responsibilities in his report," Sharif said.
"ACC filed the cases against them, as they embezzled the government property (devices) and illegally added the data of 55,310 persons including Rohingyas and others in the NID server in collaboration with each other," said the DAD.
Mahfuzul Islam, staff of Ramu Upazila EC office, Rasel Barua, office assistant of Patiya Upazila Election office, and Mostafa Farque, former technical expert of Chattogram EC office were also sued in the case.
ACC Deputy Director Shuvash lodged the second case against three EC staff, two Teknaf brokers and two Rohingyas- Foyaz Ullah, and his wife Mahmuda Khatun.
The EC staff took benefits from the Rohingya couple and uploaded their data in the NID server by creating fake birth registration using the designated electronic devices, said the ACC deputy director.
