Youth 'tortured' by policemen, dies
A youth, detained on suspicion of theft, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday after police allegedly pushed him off the roof of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station Complex on Monday.
The victim, Rasel Mia, 20, a night guard of Shahjalal Islami Bank's ATM booth, was son of Robi Mia of Madhyapara Shantibag area.
Deceased's elder brother Liton Mia said Rasel, who was undergoing treatment at the Neurosurgery Ward of DMCH, died around 3:15am.
Rasel's family members alleged that police called Rasel to the police station on Monday before filing a case in connection with a burglary incident that took place on Sunday night at Swapnoloke, a fashion house in the town, and tortured him inhumanly.
At one stage, they pushed Rasel off the roof of the police station, family members alleged, adding that seriously injured Rasel was rushed to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital and then shifted to DMCH.
Although the manager of the fashion house Shafiqul Islam did not mention any name in the case, police detained Rasel and seven others on suspicion, they added.
Officer-in-Charge of the police station Md Nabir Hossain said Rasel and other detainees were taken to the second floor of the police station complex from where he dodged the on-duty police constables and reached the rooftop. Rasel jumped from there, got severely injured and died at DMCH yesterday, he added.
