Train operation halts for 4 hours
Movement of trains on Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet routes through Brahmanbaria Railway Station remained stopped for over four hours following attack on the driver of Sylhet-bound Jayantika Express by some addicted youths at the station around 2:30pm yesterday.
The train along with Chittagong-bound Nasirabad Express was seen staranded at Brahmanbaria while writing this report at 5:20pm as the colleagues of the injured driver, Alim Hossain, 35, an assistant locomotive master, stopped operation of trains in protest.
Alim, the driver of Jayantika Express from Dhaka, tried to prevent a group of addicted youths when they were trying to get on the train engine at the station, said the assistant stationmaster of Brahmanbaria station.
“Then they beat the driver mercilessly and fled away. The seriously injured driver was taken to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital for treatment. His eye has been damaged,” he added.
“We don't know when we will reach Sylhet as the train is lying stranded for three hours. Strict measures should be taken against those who cause nuisance on trains after taking illegal rides, especially on engines,” said Tapos Jubaer, a passenger of Jayantika Express around 5:00pm.
There are allegations that addicted youths often take rides without tickets on trains from Bhairab Bazar to Akhaura and create unwanted scenes there.
