Locals today staged demonstrations in Thakurgaon's Haripur upazila town protesting the rape of an SSC examinee on Sunday.

They also demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the alleged rapist, a private tutor of the 16-year-old girl, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.

According to a case filed over the incident, the victim's private tutor Provat Chandra, 28, brought her to his coaching centre in Dhirganj Bazar area yesterday morning and raped her.

Hearing the screams of the victim, locals rescued the girl around 12:30pm and took her to a local hospital for treatment, according to the case statement.  Later, the girl was shifted to Thakurgaon Sadar Hopital as her condition was deteriorating.

The victim's father filed the rape case with Haripur Police Station last night, accusing Provat and four others.

Protesting the incident, aggrieved locals flocked to Haripur Upazila Parishad's office this afternoon.

They also submitted a memorandum to the upazila nirbahi officer and formed a human chain and rally at the upazila parishad compound to press home their demand.

The agitating people also threatened tougher movement if the accused were not arrested immediately, reports our correspondent.      

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Karim told our correspondent he has already asked law enforcement agencies to ensure punishment of the accused.
