People suffer in transport strike
District transport owners and workers yesterday observed a dawn to dusk strike here to realise their five-point demand, including arrest of the killers of a bus driver.
The demands include withdrawal of all police personnel from Gorai Highway Police Station and stopping extortion on highway by police.
As all types of vehicular movements to different districts remained suspended from Tangail due to the strike, passengers suffered much.
Due to the strike, many passengers faced trouble after reaching the bus terminal in the town, said locals.
"I came out of my house with my father, a kidney patient, to take him to a doctor in Dhaka, but I did not know about the transport strike," Rafique said.
Saudi Arabia expatriate Hares Ali Miah of Salla in Kalihati upazila said his flight was around 5:00am but he was informed about the transport strike after coming to the bus terminal.
On February 12, armed criminals looted valuables from a passenger bus on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur and stabbed its driver Shajahan Miah, 45, dead.
Bus-Minibus Owners' Association and Transport Workers' Union in the district On February 19 called the strike to realise the demands.
