Water transport workers stage demo for resumption of launch services
Water transport workers demonstrated in Dhaka today demanding immediate resumption of launch services on all routes across the country in compliance with health guidelines and payment of all arrears including salaries and bonuses by May 7.
The water transport services are now suspended across the country due to Covid-19 restrictions.
As per the scheduled programme announced by Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation, a body of river transport workers, the workers started a protest procession in front of the central office of the federation in Dhaka around 10am and gathered in front of the BIWTA office around 11am where a rally was held, said a press release.
The rally was presided over by Md Shah Alam Bhuiyan, president of Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation and conducted by Prakash Dutta, office secretary of the federation.
Speaking during the programme, leaders said workers of launch and public transport were most affected by the "lockdown" as the government did not take any alternative measure for their livelihoods. At the same time, people, including workers, are spending more than twice to travel in different ways violating health rules.
As such they have demanded immediate resumption of launch services in compliance with the health guidelines and payment of all arrears by May 7.
Later, a five-member representative team handed over a memorandum to the chairman of the BIWTA and called upon the appropriate authorities to play an effective role in implementing the demand.
