Tangail storm kills 1, hurts 15
A boy was killed, 15 others were injured and over a hundred dwelling houses were damaged as storm lashed different areas of Tangail on Friday evening.
A wall of the house of Rupchan Miah at Malauri village in Madhupur upazila collapsed during the storm just before the iftar time, leaving his wife Dilruba, 36, and sons Rakib, 11, and Sakib, 9, injured, locals said.
They were sent to Madhupur Upazila Health Complex.
Later seriously injured Rakib and Sakib were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where Rakib succumbed to his injures at around 10:00pm, they said.
Ten people were hurt when the storm hit three villages under Hemnagar union in Gopalpur upazila the same time. Five of the injured people were admitted to the upazila health complex, locals said.
About 100 dwelling houses at Kuirabari, Balbari and Bholarpara villages in the upazila were damaged in the storm while electricity connections were disrupted at five villages in the union as a pole of the Rural Electrification Board broke, they said.
A kathbadam tree fell on a boy in Tangail Stadium area during the storm, leaving him seriously injured.
The victim, Shanta Chowhan, 11, was admitted to Tangail General Hospital, locals said.
Upai Ali of Balbari village said the storm damaged houses of local people, including three structures of his dwelling house.
Rezaul Karim of the same village said his mother Razia Begum was injured as his house was damaged in the storm.
Joynal Miah of Bholarpara village said one of his cows died, being crushed under a collapsed tree during the storm.
Bikash Biswas, upazila nirbahi officer in Gopalpur, said they were preparing lists of the villagers affected by the storm for providing them financial support.
