Prisoner attempts to kill self at court dock
An undertrial prisoner tried to kill himself by cutting throat with the sharp metallic part of his handcuff out of frustration at the dock of the senior judicial magistrate’s court in the district on Sunday.
Critically injured Jahidul Islam Bakul, 30, was rushed to Nilphamari 250-bed Modernized Hospital and then shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) as his condition worsened.
Bakul, son of Abdul Mannan, is accused in a bike lifting case, said Court Inspector Shahid Suhrawardy, adding that Mannan is an employee of Saidpur railway workshop.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Nilphamari 250-bed Modernized Hospital Dr Shafi Mahmud said Bakul was given 10 stitches for his wounds.
As his condition worsened, he was shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, said the RMO.
On Sunday morning, Bakul and three other accused were brought to the court from Thakurgaon jail in the bike lifting case filed by one Talukdar Nazrul Islam of Nizpara area in Saidpur on September 29.
The four have been languishing in Thakurgaon jail for long in two other cases, said the court inspector.
Around 11:30am, when Senior Judicial Magistrate Sahadev Chandra Roy after hearing the case ordered to send the four to jail, Bakul pointed his finger at the judge and loudly said he has been languishing in Thakurgaon jail for long and so frustrated.
At one stage, he tried to commit suicide by cutting throat with the sharp metallic part of his handcuff, said the inspector.
Police instantly rescued Bakul and sent him to Nilphamari 250-bed Modernized Hospital.
It is mentioning that Bakul’s father got so fade up with his son’s anti-social activities like theft and due to this, he refused to appoint any lawyer to run the case.
