Over 600 attacked with diarrhoea in 5 days
Diarrhoea has continued to spread in different areas of the district town.
The most affected areas are Horipur, Dariapur, Upar Rajarampur and Namo Nimgachhi.
At least 612 people have been attacked with the waterborne disease and admitted to Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital in the last five days, said Dr Jahid Nazrul Chowdhury, civil surgeon of the district.
Baby Ara, senior staff nurse of the hospital, said 44 patients were admitted to diarrhoea ward in the last ten hours.
Many diarrhoea patients are being treated in the hospital corridor due to lack of accommodation.
There is no crisis of Intravenous (IV) fluids, oral saline and necessary medicines at the hospital to cope with the increased number of diarrhoea patients, said the civil surgeon.
Most of the people have been attacked with diarrhoea due to drinking of unsafe water, he said.
Soniya Khatun, 35, of Upar Rajarampur area, said she has been attacked with diarrhoea and took treatment on the hospital floor as all beds are filled up.
Another diarrhoea patient Sahera Khatun, 65, of Dariapur area in the town, said she also took treatment on the hospital floor.
During a visit to the hospital on Sunday, this correspondent saw that many diarrhoea patients were being treated at the hospital corridor and floor of two different wards due to lack of accommodation.
Over 100 patients come to the hospital every day, but the hospital authorities cannot provide them with accommodation at the 12-bed ward meant for diarrhoea patients, said the nurse.
Though medicines are available at the hospital, they are facing problem to deal with the growing number of patients for shortage of doctors.
Dr Nadim Sarkar, resident medical officer, said there is no crisis of IV fluids at the hospital.
