One dies as fishing boats collide
A fisherman was killed and two others got serious injuries as two fishing boats collided in the Jamuna river near Alodia Char in the district's Shibalaya upazila early yesterday.
Defying the ongoing ban, they went to the river with engine-run boats to catch hilsa, locals said.
“The boats collided amid dark in the night around 1:45am. Bahaj Sheikh, 55, died on the spot while Ayub Ali, 45, and Saidul Islam, 35, were seriously injured. They are residents of Alokdia Char in Shivalaya upazila,” said Khandaker Imam Hossain, OC of Shibalaya Police Station.
“The two injured fishermen were admitted to Shibalaya Upazila Health Complex. Police recovered the deceased's body and sent it to Manikganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy,” he said.
Defying a government ban, a section of fishermen are catching hilsa from Padma and Jamuna rivers allegedly with the support of some ruling party leaders in exchange of money.
