A Mymensingh court yesterday sentenced a young man to death for killing in a schoolboy in 2013.
The convict, Rakibul Islam, 25, son of Abdur Razzak, is a resident of Paika Shimul village in Muktagachha upazila of the district.
Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Helal Uddin delivered the verdict in presence of the convict yesterday afternoon and also fined him Tk 10,000, Court Inspector Sheikh Kabirul Islam said.
According to the case statement, Majeda Khatun was staying at her house with her three children when her husband went to perform hajj on September 25, 2013.
On October 19, Majeda’s 10-year-old son Mahbubur Rahman Maruf, a Class III student at Residential Model School in Mymensingh town, went out of the house and did not return home.
Later, Majeda and her neighbours looked for the boy at every possible places and finally found his throat-slit body at a nearby bush around 11:30pm the same day and informed police.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
The following day, Majeda filed a case with Muktagachha Police Station against her relative Rakibul, his father Razzaq and his brother Rezaul Karim.
After examining witnesses and pieces of evidence, the court acquitted Razzaq and Rezaul as charges brought against them were not proved.
