Farm worker beaten mercilessly
A man was arrested in Sadar upazila on Wednesday on charge of beating a farm labourer mercilessly.
The arrestee is Hamidul Islam Khan, 47, son of late Lutfar Rahman Khan of Kazir Chawra village, said Officer In Charge of Sadar Police Station Mohammad Rayhan.
Victim Promodh Chandra Barmon, 55, son of late Surendranath Barmon of Hiramanik village, is now undergoing treatment at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
Promodh was hired by local farmer Abdul Miah for harvesting paddy at Kazir Chawra village on Friday. He along with other farm labourers including Hamidul and his elder brother Ayub Ali Khan was harvesting paddy at a field on Friday noon.
At that time, Hamid was singing song during Azan. When Promodh asked Hamidul not to sing song during Azan, Hamidul got angry.
“Later, Hamidul and his brother beat me mercilessly and at one stage I became senseless,” said Promodh.
Promodh's wife Surobala Rani said her husband is the lone bread earner of their family. They have been going through hardship since her husband was admitted to hospital.
Abdul Miah, 50, a local farmer, said, "Although Promodh is a Hindu, he respects Azan but the attackers did not show respect to it."
Promodh sustained injuries in his chest, back and stomach, said Dr Mohammad Mahfil of the hospital.
Police are raiding different areas to arrest another accused in the case, said OC Rayhan.
