'Drug smuggler' killed in 'gunfight' with BGB
An alleged drug smuggler was killed in a “gunfight” with Border Guard Bangladesh along Jamalpur border in Kushtia's Daulatpur upazila early yesterday.
The victim is Haidul Farazi, 26, of Jamalpur village in the upazila.
Lt Col Rashed Khan, commander of 47 BGB Battalion, said a patrol team of Joypur BGB camp asked for the identities of a gang of 14 to 15 people when they were returning home along with drugs from India around 3:30am. The gang then opened fire, forcing the BGB men to retaliate.
After the “gun battle”, the BGB men found a body lying on the spot. The victim was later identified as Haidul, the official said.
The BGB claimed to have recovered a locally made gun, five bullets, five kg of cannabis and 100 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.
Police sent the body to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for an autopsy after it was handed over to them.
Shah Dara Khan, officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station, said Haidul was a listed drug smuggler.
