‘Drug peddler’ killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’
A suspected drug peddler was killed in what police claimed a gunfight in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early today.
The deceased was identified as Nazmul Hossain, 27, hailing from the same upazila, our Kushtia correspondent reports quoting Officer-in-Charge of Detective Branch of Meherpur Police Obaidur Rahman.
Nazmul was an accused in five cases, of which, four were drug related while another was filed for his involvement in a recent attack on the members of Border Guard Bangladesh, the OC said.
Acting on a tip-off that a group of drug peddlers were holding a meeting at Karandi village in the upazila, the DB team conducted a raid in the area around 3:30am, he said.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the drug peddlers opened fire on them, prompting a “gunfight” in retaliation, the police official added.
At one stage, the criminals fled the spot leaving the bullet-hit body of Nazmul.
Police recovered a shutter gun, one kilogramme of cannabis and a motorcycle from the spot.
