BCL leader Junnun surrenders, sent to jail
Shamsuddin Junnun, president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit of Shahid Bulbul Government College in Pabna, who allegedly led an attack on Lecturer Masudur Rahman of the same college on May 12, was sent to jail by a Pabna court yesterday.
Shamsuddin, 25, was shown arrested yesterday in the case filed for assaulting Masudur, after he surrendered to the superintendent of police in Pabna in the morning, said Obaidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station.
Shibli Sadik, president of Pabna district unit of BCL, said, “Even though Junnun is not an accused in the case, he surrendered to police as per the directive of the home minister.”
Expressing satisfaction over Junnun’s arrest, Masudur Rahman, the college teacher, said, “After Junnun’s arrest, I am optimistic about getting justice.”
Last week’s assault on the college teacher by BCL activists, allegedly led by Junnun, sparked a nationwide outcry and several human chains were formed demanding justice for the teacher.
In a CCTV video footage, which went viral since the attack, a group of youths were seen pouncing, one of them kicking, on Masudur Rahman, a lecturer at Shahid Bulbul Government College, while he was leaving the campus on his motorbike.
Right before one of the youths kicked Masudur in the back, several others were seen punching him and issuing apparent threats. Ever since, the teacher could not attend classes or file any case against the powerful thugs out of fear for his life.
