Bamboo bridge only means
Thousands of people of Sultanpur union in Rajbari Sadar upazila and Machar union in Faridpur Sadar upazila are suffering for want of a permanent bridge over the Kumar river.
Locals said the people of Sultanpur, Vati Sultanpur, Char Kishnapur, Khalisa Ramkantopur, Islampur and Ramnagar villages of Rajbari Sadar upazila and Khopkandi, Poranpur, Gobindapur and a few other villages of Faridpur Sadar upazila use a bamboo bridge to cross the river to go to their destinations, including the district headquarters, but the bridge has turned risky due to use by a large number of people.
As Poranpur High School, Gobindapur High School, Poranpur Government Primary School, Baharuddin Buniadi Nongovernment Primary School and two kindergartens are located in the Faridpur portion, around 400 students of the Rajbari portion face great difficulty in attending those institutions due to the lack of a bridge over the river, they added.
“We live in Rajbari but our school is in Faridpur, so we need to cross the river daily over the bamboo bridge, which is very risky, to go to our schools,” said Sukla Kapasia, a Class VI student at Poranpur High School.
“If we do not use the bamboo bridge we need to walk around one and half kilometres more to reach our school,” said Sadia Akter, another student of the same school.
“A large number of farmers carrying agro-products face trouble every time while crossing the river over the bamboo bridge to go to the nearest market in Faridpur in order to sell their products,” said Ratan Kumar Roy, a farmer of Khalisa village.
“Every year, locals build a bamboo bridge at their own cost, but we need a permanent bridge,” said Ohab Biswas, a resident of Poranpur village.
“We live in the border area of two districts, so on one takes care of us. Now we are suffering much for the lack of a bridge,” said Sheikh Sadin of the same village.
“That area is border area of two districts and there is no bridge within four km of the area. I shall ask the authorities to build a bridge as soon as possible,” said Sultalpur Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Rajjak Mia.
