Bailey bridge collapses
Road communication on Tangail-Aricha road remained snapped after a Bailey bridge collapsed in Barpusha area under Nagarpur upazila early yesterday, causing immense sufferings to passengers.
Hundreds of light and heavy vehicles ply the regional road to Doulatpur, Ghior, Manikganj, Dhaka, Aricha and Paturia through Nagarpur and Tangail every day.
The heavy vehicles used to move on the road as an alternative when gridlock is created on Dhaka-Tangail highway, locals said.
The bridge on a canal collapsed when a sand-laden truck was crossing it around 3:45am, said Md Shawkat Hossain, chairman of Bekra Union Parishad.
The trucker and his helper might have managed to escape unhurt, he said.
After the bridge collapse, local passengers are crossing the canal by boats to reach their destinations, said the chairman.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Asma Shahin said they have already written to the high officials of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in Tangail for making the collapsed bridge usable for commuters as soon as possible.
Amimul Ehsan, executive engineer of RHD in Tangail, said they were taking steps to replace the bridge by bringing a Bailey bridge from Sherpur district.
It may need four to five days for the replacement, he said, adding that in the mean period, the commuters can use the alternative road from Nagarpur Bazar to Dhuburia.
