AL candidate, party 'rebel' allege breach of polls code
Awami League (AL) candidate in Mymensingh and party 'rebel' in Tangail brought allegations against local AL lawmakers of breaching election rules in the upcoming upazila polls.
Our Tangail correspondent reported that, 'rebel' candidate Khorshed Alam, contesting for Sadar upazila parishad chairman post, alleged that AL lawmaker from Tangail-5 constituency Sanowar Hssain has been breaching the election rules.
Incumbent Chairman Khorshed, also president of Sadar upazila unit AL, came up with the allegation at a press conference at Tangail Press Club on Tuesday.
While delivering his written speech, Khorshed said he is contesting the polls after he came to know that no organisational steps will be taken against those who are taking part in the upazila polls as rebel candidate.
Being jealous of his popularity, local lawmaker Sanowar in an extended party meeting recently said he (Khorshed) was relieved from the Sadar upazila unit president post, Khorshed alleged.
“None but the AL central executive committee has the power to relieve him from the party post,” Khorshed said.
Khorshed also alleged that the lawmaker is trying to influence the election by threatening the party leaders and activists, who are working in favour of him.
Refuting the allegation, Sanowar said though a meeting was held at his house on Monday, no election related discussion was held there.
Mentionable, AL nominated its district unit Joint Secretary Shahjahan Ansary for the chairman post.
Away in Mymensingh, AL nominated chairman candidate for Nandail upazila parishad at a press conference at Mymensingh Press Club yesterday alleged that local AL lawmaker has been campaigning for the 'rebel' candidate, violating the election rules, reports our correspondent.
“I am getting all out support from all the ruling party units in the upazila. But unfortunately local lawmaker Anwarul Abedin Khan Tuhin directly took his position in favour of 'rebel' candidate Hasan Mahmud Jewel,” AL nominated candidate and incumbent Chairman Abdul Malek Chowdhury Swapon said.
Since announcement of the election schedule, lawmaker Tuhin has been campaigning for Jewel, former upazila unit AL publicity secretary, and attending his public gatherings, Swapon alleged, adding that as a lawmaker one can not do this.
Denying his involvement in the election campaign, Tuhin said he is at a neutral position now and does not work for any candidates.
