5 children drown
Five children, aged between four and 13, died in separate drowning incidents across the country on Sunday and yesterday.
On Sunday in Chakoria of Cox's Bazar, Asmaul Husna, 9, and Sazia Jannat, 10, drowned in Bagachhori canal of North Rang Mahal area in Dulahazra union.
They were daughters of Nezam Uddin and Sarwar Alam respectively, both from the same area, reports our correspondent in Cox's Bazar.
Locals said Asmaul first slipped and fell in a deep cavity in the canal around 2:30pm when she and Sazia were going to a nearby house. Sazia jumped in the canal to save Asmaul, but none of them could get out of it alive.
Doctors pronounced both the girls dead after locals took them to Malumghat Memorial Christian Hospital, said Chakoria Police Station OC Bakhtiar Uddin Chowdhury.
In Jashore's Monirampur upazila the same day, Ajmer Sheik, a third-grade student, drowned in a pond at Shahedpara village in the morning.
Ajmer, 8, son of Alamgir Sheikh in Chashra area of Jashore town, was visiting his grandfather's house with his mother for his uncle's wedding, reports our correspondent in Benapole.
"The boy with two other children went to bathe in a nearby pond around 11:30am. His family members started looking for him after all but Ajmer returned," said Sub-Inspector Jasmin Akhter of Monirampur Police Station.
The boy was found floating in the pond later and was rushed to upazila health complex where he was pronounced dead.
In Phulchhari upazila of Gaibandha, fire fighters, following two hours of frantic efforts, found body of sixth grader Yamin Hasan Emon from the Brahmaputra near a river dock in Balashi area.
His father is Shaheen Mia from Trimohoni village in Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
Emon and three of his friends went swimming in the river around 2:00pm, said police quoting locals.
At one stage, one of the boys swam back to safety, but other three went missing after being swept away by strong current in the river, our Gaibandha correspondent reports.
Locals rescued two of them. After being unable to trace Emon, they called the fire service, who found Emon's body around 6:00pm, said Khan Md Shahrier, OC of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station.
Yesterday morning in Jhenidah, body of Helal Uddin, 4, son of Belal Hossain from Fazilpur village of Shailakupa upazila, was found in a drain used for dispersing water from a tube well platform, reports our correspondent in Jhenidah.
