20 fishermen jailed in 2 dists
Mobile courts in Manikganj and Barishal districts jailed 20 fishermen for different terms for violating the on-going temporary ban on hilsa fishing while six people were injured and 17 fishermen detained during a clash in Chandpur, reports our correspondent.
In Chandpur, at least six people, including three policemen, were injured during a clash between a group of fishermen and members of river police yesterday when the latter conducted a drive against illegal fishing in Rajrajeshwar area in Sadar upazila during the ongoing ban.
The law enforcers fired four rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
After the incident police detained 17 fishermen from the spot and seized 50,000 metres of current nets and 21 kg hilsa from there.
All the injured are now undergoing treatment at Chandpur General Hospital.
Our Manikganj correspondent reported that a mobile court in Shivalaya upazila yesterday detained 15 fishermen from the Padma and Jamuna rivers and sentenced them to one year imprisonment for netting hilsa defying the 22-day ongoing ban.
Upazila Fisheries Officer Atiar Rahman said the court, led by Shivalaya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) AFM Firoz Mahmud, conducted separate drives in the two rivers from 12:00am and arrested 15 fishermen from deferent points of the rivers.
In Barishal, law enforcers conducted a drive in the Kirtankhola river in Sadar upazila yesterday and detained 11 fishermen for defying the ongoing ban on hilsa catching.
Sadar UNO and Executive Magistrate Mosharraf Hossain said of them, five fishermen were sentenced to three months imprisonment while six others fined Tk 5,000 each.
During the drive, they also seized 6,000 metres of fishing nets and 54 kg hilsa, he said, adding that the seized fishes were later distributed among different madrasas of the city.
