157 Bangladeshis stranded in Australia on their way home
One hundred and fifty-seven Bangladeshis, who were stranded in Australia due to a ban on international flights amid the coronavirus pandemic, have departed Melbourne for Dhaka on a special Sri Lankan Airlines flight today.
The flight will land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital early Saturday, after a stopover at Colombo, said a foreign ministry statement.
The High Commission of Bangladesh in Canberra facilitated their return with support from authorities of Bangladesh and Australia, and with active cooperation from Victorian Bangladeshi Community Foundation (VBCF) and Melton Travel Center.
Initially, Bangladesh High Commission in Canberra received requests from 340 Bangladeshi nationals in Australia seeking to return home. Based on that, the high commission secured in principle approval of Bangladesh authorities to accept special non-scheduled flights from Australia.
All passengers were notified to carry up-to-date Covid-19 symptom-free or Covid-19 negative certificate issued within three days before departure.
