Police in a drive arrested a man on Friday night for allegedly giving a threat to a teacher and a Brac employee using the name of militant outfit Islamic State (IS) from Doshani area in Bagerhat town.

The arrestee was identified as Ashit Kumar Das, 52, son of late Mani Lal Das, a resident of the area.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district Pankaj Chandra Roy said Ashit sent two separate letters to Arun Kumar Chakrabarti, a teacher of Selimabad Degree College in Morelganj upazila, and Bikash Chandra Bashu, an employee of NGO Brac.

In the letter, claiming himself a member of the Middle East-based militant outfit IS, Ashit threatened to kill Arun and Bikash.

Later, the duo informed police about the matter.

Following this, police carried out an investigation and found Ashit’s involvement with the incident and arrested him.

During primary interrogation, Ashit admitted that he had sent the letters following previous enmity and debt related dispute, the SP added.

A case was filed with Bagerhat Model Police Station in connection with the incident.
