Lightning kills 6 in 4 districts
Six people died today after being struck by lightning in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Nilphamari districts.
Of them, four died in Sylhet while one each in Sunamganj, Habiganj and Nilphamari.
In Sylhet, three youths died being struck by lightning while catching fish at Jilkar haor, a water body in Mirergaon village of Sadar upazila this afternoon, reports our correspondent.
The victims were identified as Babul Mia, 20, his brother Emon Mia, 10, and their cousin Abdul Amin, 18.
They were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced them dead.
Md Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, confirmed the incident to The Daily Star.
In Sunamganj, Jahur Alam, 35, resident of Menjargaon village in Balijuri union of Tahirpur upazila, died on the spot after a thunderbolt hit him while fishing in a haor in the evening, Nandan Kanti Dhar, officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station, told The Daily Star.
In Habiganj, Abdul Karim, 35, a farmer in Tegharia village of Sadar upazila, died on the spot as a thunderbolt struck him while he was working in a paddy field, Mojammel Haque, officer-in-charge of Baniachang Police Station, told The Daily Star.
In Nilphamari, a youth died after being hit by a thunderbolt in Porakot village under Kishoreganj upazila of the district this morning, reports BSS.
The youth was identified as Liton Boishaw, 25, of Porakot village under Putimari union of the upazila.
Local people said the thunderbolt struck Liton around 7:00am when he was catching fish in a water body of the village.
He died on the spot.
Putimari Union Parishad chairman Abu Syem confirmed the incident.
