Fake NGO vanishes with Tk 1.20cr
Officials of a fake non-governmental organisation (NGO) have gone into hiding after misappropriating Tk 1.20 crore from around 2000 clients.
Police sealed off the office of National Development Society (NDS) on Saturday. They are also hunting for the NGO officials.
Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station, said seven to eight people introducing themselves as officials of the NGO took an office at the four-storied building owned by retired police officer Khademul Islam in the town in April this year.
They decorated three rooms with furniture and declared they would give people loan with soft credit. The NGO officials started collecting money as deposit from the people by providing so called 'necessary papers.'
"I deposited Tk 10,000 upon assurance getting Tk 1.20 lakh loan from the NGO within a month,” said victim Kalpana Khatun of Haripur village in Sadar upazila.
Thus, they collected around Tk 1.20 crore from around 2000 people of different walks of life.
“I came to the NGO office on Saturday afternoon to take loan as they promised. But I found their office locked,” said Kalpana.
Then many people, like Kalpana, rushed to the office and came to know that the NGO officials had gone into hiding several days ago.
They even did not pay the house rent for the month of June, said house owner Khademul.
Their mobile phones were found switched off, he said.
On information, a police team rushed to the spot and sealed off the office, said the OC of Kushtia Model Police Station.
