Killing of Netrakona Headmaster

Ex-UP member held, 7 other accused absconding

One of the suspects involved in the killing of a headmaster, allegedly by a guardian of a schoolboy in Kalmakanda upazila of Netrakona, was arrested yesterday.

The deceased, Delwar Hossain Saydee Dulal, 50, was headmaster of Udhoypur Mitali High School in Kalmakanda.

The arrestee, Judge Mia, 55, son of late Abdul Hekim of Baghsatra village in Borokhapon union, is a former member of Borokhapon Union Parishad.

Through tracking Judge Mia's mobile, police raided Kunura village and arrested him from his relative's house yesterday, said Kalmakanda Police Station OC AKM Mizanur Rahman.

Judge Mia was produced before a Netrakona court that sent him to jail, the OC said.

Protesting the killing, hundreds of teachers and students held rallies at Kalmakanda upazila headquarters on Monday and Tuesday, suspending their classes and examinations. They also submitted a memorandum to the upazila nirbahi officer demanding the immediate arrest of all the accused.

Quoting teachers of the school, police said the headmaster asked Maruf Ahmed, a seventh grade student of the school, to pay his dues and half-yearly examination fees for his scheduled examinations on Sunday morning.

Being informed, Maruf's father Chand Mia, a rent-a-bike driver, and some of his relatives went to the school and had an altercation with the headmaster. At one stage they hit him repeatedly on the chest.

The teacher was rushed to Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he died on Sunday night, said police.

Victim's younger brother Alal Uddin lodged a murder case with Kalmakanda Police Station on Monday, accusing eight people, including Chand Mia and Judge Mia.
