‘Criminal’ killed in Savar ‘gunfight’
An alleged criminal was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Charipara Kurgaw area of Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka early today.
The deceased was identified as Rasel Dewan, 37, son of late Piyar Ali of Niribili Takshu area in Ashulia, Mohsinul Kadir, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station told our Savar correspondent.
Police yesterday arrested Rasel from Niribili area. Later, according to his confessional statement, a police team went to Charipara area with Rasel to recover arms around 2:00am, the OC said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the associates of Rasel opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a “gunfight”, the OC added.
Rasel was caught in the line of fire but his associates managed to flee the scene. Bullet owned Rasel was taken to Savar Upazila Health Complex where the duty-doctor declared him dead, the OC said
Police also recovered two pistols and some bullet shells from the spot.
Later in the morning, the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Rasel was wanted in 14 cases including for murder, robbery and arms filed with the several police stations, said the OC.
